Kumite 組手

In the modern modalities of Japanese martial arts, one of the training and competition components is fighting, combat. In karate, together with the kihon and the kata, it forms the basic triad of its didactics. It is classified according to the pedagogical purpose. It was not always part of the classes because the masters considered it risky to practice it without real need for a fight.
Ordinarily, there are three types of fighting training:  jyu kumite (自由組手), or free fighting with control; shiai kumite (試合組手), competitive combat, semi-free, with extreme control of the blows; e yakusoku kumite (約束組手), combined combat.
There was also in the past the challenge that was called Jissen kumite (実戦組手) being the fight resulting from a challenge or a clash to measure the abilities of the contestants. In traditional styles, it mainly came from a personal challenge or from the practice of yaburi dojo, which consisted of challenging a dojo that one intended to join. It is not, therefore, a form of training. It was the rule, however, that it be done with veneration and honor.
