ENGLISH Kobudo (古武道), is a martial art of handling various weapons that was created on the island of Okinawa and the other islands of the Ryukyu archipelago, south of Japan. Its origin is linked to Karate, which was also born in Okinawa. Usually the term Kobudo is translated as “path of ancient martial arts”. Kobudo is also commonly referred to by its practitioners as Ryukyu Kobudo (琉球古武道), Okinawa Kobudo (沖縄古武道) or simply Kobudo from Okinawa. These terms are used to distinguish the Kobudo created in Okinawa from the martial arts of the Samurai created in the main islands of Japan and which are called by the terms Kobujutsu, Koryu and also Kobudo. Sometimes the term Kobujutsu (古武術) is also used as a synonym for Kobudo of Okinawa. |
