Karate kata
(PATTERN) are performed as a specific series of movements, with
steps and twists along with arm or leg techniques, while trying
to maintain perfect form and correctly trace the EMBUSEN (kata
step map).
During kata, the
karateka must be remembering or imagining the application of the
movements in front of an opponent, even if it is done by
striking in the air.
The study of
kata must be accompanied by bunkai (knowledge and practice of
the meaning and real application of the movements).
